"The Quest for Happiness in Challenging Times"
December 28 - January 2, 2011
Pocket Sanctuary at Kenyon Ranch,
Tubac, AZ
Come and join us in our Fourth New Year’s Celebration! The closing days of one year and the dawning days of the next year offer a special opportunity to pause, take stock, gather up the lessons and blessings from 2010 past year and look ahead to what we want to manifest in 2011. This year’s program will focus on our quest for happiness.
The Nation of Bhutan measures success by the happiness of the people. Their economic scale is GNH, or Gross National Happiness. The western countries measure progress by what we produce: Gross Domestic Product (GDP). “The Global fixation on GDP growth that implied all consumption was good even if it meant dooming future generations to a declining quality of life-or no life at all. The true measure of prosperity...needs to be based on a broader understanding of concepts like happiness.” (Newsweek, Aug. 2010).
Phakyab Rinpoche will teach on Amitayus, the Buddha of Eternal Life, and how to cultivate happiness in challenging times. He will help us transform obstacles like anger and fear into radiant joy, happiness and compassion. We will learn why it IS politically correct to be happy even in the poor state of our economy and global economic suffering. Robert Clark, a Tibetan scholar and professor from Stanford, will translate.

Phakyab Rinpoche (pronounced “Puk Yub Rin Poh Chey”), is a Geshe and a highly renowned practitioner in the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism. Born in Kham, Tibet, in 1966 and ordained at the age of thirteen, Rinpoche received a rigorous traditional education in Buddhist philosophy and ritual in Tibet and then at Sera Monastery in South India. While studying for his Geshe degree, the highest rank in Tibetan Buddhist scholarship, he was recognized by the Dalai Lama as the eighth reincarnation of Phakyab Rinpoche—a venerated Buddhist teacher—and was requested to return to Tibet in order to assume leadership of the Ashi and Lithang monasteries, the traditional seats of Phakyab Rinpoche. While teaching in Tibet, Rinpoche was apprehended for his religious beliefs and subsequently fled back to India before immigrating to the USA in 2003. Rinpoche is also a dedicated advocate of the innate potential we all possess to heal ourselves, physically, mentally and emotionally. After escaping from Tibet, he developed a number of serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses and, upon arriving in the US in 2004, he was given a bleak medical prognosis. Harnessing his practiced meditation skills, Rinpoche underwent a journey of radical self- healing that has astonished and inspired doctors, friends and audiences across the U.S. In his lectures and seminars, Rinpoche offers audiences techniques for mobilizing our thoughts, emotions and physical body to promote radical mind-body healing.
Rinpoche will give a a TSOG and a Blessing Ceremony.
In the Buddhist spirit of generosity and inclusiveness, Dharma teachings are offered free of charge. However, voluntary donations for the teacher and translator, or Dana, are welcome and your generosity is gratefully accepted and encouraged.
